☢️ OpenAI Ushers in AI-Search

Is this the breaking of the internet as we know it?

The Daily Prompt

When I say “search”, which brand comes to mind? Google, right? Of course a few of you may have said Bing and an even fewer may have said DuckDuckGo or Yahoo.

Generally speaking though, it’s Google.

But pretty soon, it might be SearchGPT, an AI search engine (?) developed by the same outfit that came out with ChatGPT, OpenAI. Is this a good thing? I cannot believe I'm rooting for Alphabet here, but the idea of OpenAI taking over search has me feeling some foreboding about the future (especially August 29th*).

Let’s provide some content and context around AI search.

The AI Search Revolution

In an era where information overload is the norm, the world of web search is undergoing a significant transformation. As AI-generated content proliferates, traditional search engines like Google are struggling to provide relevant, high-quality results. Enter AI-powered search, a promising solution that could revolutionize how we find and interact with information online. Oh really?

The explosion of AI-generated content has made finding reliable information increasingly challenging. Users often find themselves sifting through pages of irrelevant or low-quality results, leading to frustration and wasted time. This situation has created a pressing need for more sophisticated search solutions.

AI-Powered Search: A New Paradigm

OpenAI, known for its ChatGPT technology, has recently unveiled SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine prototype. This development represents a significant shift in search technology, offering several potential advantages:

  • Contextual Understanding: AI-powered search aims to comprehend the intent behind queries, not just match keywords.

  • Interactive Searching: Users can engage in a conversational manner, asking follow-up questions for more nuanced exploration.

  • Efficient Information Retrieval: By providing more targeted results, AI search could significantly reduce the time spent looking for information.

Considerations and Challenges

While the prospects of AI-powered search are exciting, it's important to consider potential challenges:

  • Accuracy and Reliability: AI models can sometimes produce incorrect information or "hallucinate" facts - in other words, it makes stuff up!

  • Privacy Concerns: More personalized search capabilities may require additional data sharing.

  • Impact on Content Creators: As AI improves at summarizing information, ensuring proper attribution and support for original content creators becomes crucial - see SAG-AFTRA strike.

  2. Verify Information: Always cross-reference important information with multiple reliable sources.

  3. Provide Constructive Feedback: Utilize feedback mechanisms in AI tools to report inaccuracies and suggest improvements.

  4. Stay Informed: Keep abreast of developments in AI and search technology to understand their implications and capabilities - read: join the SunshineFM community.

  5. Support Quality Content: Remember to visit and support original content creators and authoritative sources.

Conclusion - Part 1

By engaging thoughtfully with these emerging technologies, you can play an active role in shaping the future of information retrieval. As AI-powered search evolves, it has the potential to enhance our ability to find and utilize information effectively, provided we approach it with awareness and discernment.

Let me know in the comments, are you pro or con AI search? How are you using it now and how do you think your business will benefit from AI search?

But How Do We Really Feel About This?

So enough of this informative and objective take on this internet-breaking news. Literally speaking, this could break the internet as we know it. How was this news received on the interwebs? Well, I used AI to retrieve (scrape) some comments from a couple of sites that allowed public comments and came up with the following Sentiment Analysis:

Overall Sentiment

The sentiment in the comments is predominantly negative towards OpenAI's new search engine prototype, SearchGPT. There's a strong undercurrent of skepticism, frustration, and even anger among the commenters.

Main Arguments

Against SearchGPT and AI-powered search:

  1. Distrust in AI-generated summaries and potential for misinformation

  2. Concerns about the parasitic nature of AI search engines on content creators

  3. Skepticism about OpenAI's motives and the potential for monetization at the expense of user experience

  4. Worries about the impact on the broader internet ecosystem and content creation

  5. Perception that AI-powered search is a solution to a problem partly created by AI itself

In Favor of SearchGPT and AI-powered search:

  1. Potential for more efficient information retrieval

  2. Possibility of cutting through SEO spam and low-quality content

  3. Usefulness for quick answers and summarization of multiple sources

  4. Potential to improve upon current search engine limitations

Noteworthy Comments

  1. Uncivil Servant: "For many years now, people have been asking why 'The Humanities' are important, why don't we just STEM harder? Ladies and Gentlemen, this is what 'STEMing Harder' looks like!"

  2. TimeToTilt: "I just don't understand how mid to long-term this doesn't fundamentally break the internet. The deal with search engines that content creators made implicitly was that the content creators would create content that people wanted to read, and in return search engines would send them traffic."

  3. Bondi Surfer: "So they use the energy-equivalent of a small nation to train their models, using data they don't have permission to use, to create a search tool that defunds all the content creators, and makes a select few filthy rich… As a content creator, it pisses me off. On an environmental angle, it pisses me off. From an equitable, societal point of view, it pisses me off."

  4. Callias: "Internet 2030: OpenAI searches on OpenAI Search that'll see OpenAI advertising and pulls from OpenAI websites to produce OpenAI text that then needs to be verified by OpenAI using OpenAI Search that'll…. Why it's a completely automated loop with no human involvement!"

Conclusion - Part 2

The comments reveal a deep-seated concern about the direction of internet search and content creation in the age of AI. While there's recognition of potential benefits, the overwhelming sentiment is one of caution and skepticism towards OpenAI's new venture and AI-powered search in general.

Oh, you don’t say? Thanks a lot AI.
