🤔 HMM, THAT’S SUPER INTERESTING
AI News & Updates
📰 Here we are, this week’s Buzz in AI: LLMs, GenAI, and More!
💲Google & Meta Bribe Buy Local News: California's latest bill could make AI companies pay up when they use news content, a win for local journalism in the age of algorithms. This agreement aims to ensure that AI models don't get a free ride on the backs of hardworking journalists. It’s a step toward balancing the scales - because even bots should know you can’t just copy-paste your way to success. That said, not sure if this is gonna help us small, independent media outlets.
🤑 LLMs Ain’t Making Money: AI margins are tightening, forcing companies to rethink their business models, according to Cohere’s founder. With rising competition, the AI landscape is evolving quickly, and firms must innovate or risk falling behind. The pressure is on to discover new revenue streams before profits vanish - because in the fast-paced AI game, if you’re not pivoting, you might just be plummeting
🎶 Should I stAI or Should I Go? Symphonic Distribution’s new alliance with Musical AI is a savvy move, especially as AI music firms are getting hit with lawsuits over copyright issues. By giving independent artists AI tools that respect creative rights, Symphonic is ensuring they can innovate without stepping into legal minefields. It’s a smart play in a world where AI could either revolutionize or ruin the music scene.
🕵🏼♂️ Free and Private: DuckDuckGo, the privacy-first search engine, is taking things up a notch with its new anonymous AI chat feature. Now, you can ask questions and get answers without worrying about your data being harvested. It’s like having a conversation with an AI that respects your privacy - no cookies, no tracking, just answers.
🫱🏽🫲🏼 AI-Bill Finds LLM Support: Anthropic’s support for California’s AI bill, despite widespread industry pushback, highlights a pragmatic stance: better to shape regulation than be blindsided by it. While many big players balk at the potential costs, Anthropic sees long-term benefits in setting the rules of the game early—even if it means playing with a bit more restraint.
🙀 It Was Just A Matter of Time: Perplexity’s AI search app is getting ready to roll out ads, proving once again that even the smartest AI can’t resist the siren call of a good old-fashioned banner ad. So, if you thought your AI assistant was just here to help, think again—soon it’ll be multitasking by finding your answers and selling you stuff. The fine line between information and advertising is being blurred again. What did we expect — nothing is ever free.
🤣 Wild AI Biases Based on Your Name Alone: And finally, ever wondered if you look like your name? Turns out, BuzzFeed AI has the answer—or at least a hilarious guess. Prepare to laugh, cringe, and maybe rethink your name… or your face.
"It’s as if I created an alter ego where I could do the most disgusting, grotesque things that you would never do in real life … and have permission to do that. It’s been absurd and a lot of fun. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play an interpretation of myself. I got to explore the concepts and clichés people have about me and be self-deprecating."
LOCAL STUFF - PALM SPRINGS COACHELLA
Coachella Valley Giving & Philanthropy
💛 An article from The Chronicle of Philanthropy explores how nonprofits are navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI). It reveals a mixed bag of feelings within the sector: while there’s excitement about AI's potential to streamline operations and enhance donor engagement, there's also significant concern about ethical implications, job displacement, and the potential for AI to exacerbate existing inequalities.
Many nonprofits are cautiously optimistic, seeing AI as a tool that could help them do more with less—whether it's automating routine tasks, analyzing donor data more effectively, or even predicting fundraising outcomes. However, there’s a widespread fear that without proper oversight, AI could reinforce biases, making it harder for marginalized communities to receive fair treatment. Additionally, smaller organizations worry they might be left behind in the AI race, lacking the resources to implement sophisticated technologies.
Even my conversations with local nonprofits highlight the importance of AI literacy in this sector. Leaders acknowledge a steep learning curve, and there's a push for more education and training to ensure that AI is used ethically and effectively. The overarching sentiment is that while AI offers exciting possibilities, nonprofits must proceed with caution, ensuring that human values and ethical considerations remain at the forefront.

🤔 Just Thinking Out Loud
It’s fascinating to watch the AI hype cycle mellow out into something more manageable. Every new technology goes through this phase, and while it might make retail investors a bit jumpy, as a founder, I find this period oddly refreshing. It’s a chance to catch our breath and take stock of the AI landscape without being constantly whiplashed by the latest news flash or shiny new tool. Instead of chasing every release, we can finally pause, look around, and get a clearer sense of what’s actually happening in the AI world.
So here’s to the “Trough of Disillusionment”. Phew!
Infectious Optimism
This is our chance to lead, not by chasing every fleeting trend, but by thoughtfully embedding AI into the fabric of our local economy. We have the opportunity to shape AI’s role in enhancing our quality of life, from revolutionizing small businesses to making our community smarter and more connected. Palm Springs Coachella ought to be a place where innovation meets lifestyle, and now, with the AI frenzy calming down, we can blend the two in ways that are sustainable and forward-thinking.
So where do we go from here? We embrace this phase of thoughtful exploration with optimism, knowing that we’re not just adopting technology, but strategically integrating it to enhance everything that makes our valley unique. Let’s use this time to lay the groundwork for AI-driven initiatives that reflect our community’s values, ensuring that when the next wave of innovation hits, we’re not just riding it—we’re leading it.
👍🏼 Okay, that’s it for this week.
